Cynthia Rosen

I recently came across this oil painter. Her work is colorful and appealing. She paints figures, still life, and landscapes:

Serenity by cynthia rosen oil ~ 12 x 16

I also find her blog especially thought-provoking:

I recommend reading back through at least the last 1/2 dozen posts--and don't miss the ones on style and on fear. Good stuff!

Plein Air Paint Out at Prophetstown

Seven WVAS members enjoyed the plein air paintout at Prophetstown this morning. It was a balmy, windy beautiful fall day. After a morning of painting, lunch at TC's in Battleground, Indiana, topped off the experience. These photos are our paintings in progress.

Blending Film and Painting

Huffington Post describes a film about Van Gogh made with his paintings as well as other paintings based on his. It's hard to explain, so go look at the main website:

And then the trailers posted on HuffPost:

Are you a Renaissance soul?

I've recently reread Margaret Lobenstine's The Renaissance Soul: Life Design for People with Too Many Passions to Pick Just One.

Simply put, Renaissance souls are people who have lots of different interests but who often get stuck in finding a way to make progress in any of them. Lobenstine presents lots of tools and strategies for finetuning your ideas so you can move forward in chosen areas.

I've always been a list maker and paper calendar keeper. As a self-employed person, organization and meeting deadlines is my middle name. Even so, some of her strategies have been really useful as I move from a full-time indexing career into rewiring for a more arts-focused life.

As is the case in most books of this sort, some ideas were more personally applicable than others. If you've found yourself with too many interest areas and not enough forward movement--and that does not mean focusing on one thing but balancing your time among several passions--she has some tools for you to try.

I read the 2006 edition; there is a newer edition available. I suspect you could easily find a copy of one or the other at your local library or a used copy at your favorite used bookstore.

Painting Cuba! Program

Our Painting Cuba! program tonight at the Art Museum was amazing. Kathryn and Howie Clark presented a power point from their February trip to Cuba where Kathryn painted and Howie played his banjo. Howie kicked off the evening by playing "I'll see you in C -U - B -A" written by Irving Berlin. Oil paintings of scenes from the photos gave us the opportunity to experience their trip. Thanks Kathryn and Howie!
