Zentangles!

Thanks to Jan Wright, we had a very creative evening drawing zentangles on tiles with sharpies. It will be fun to see what the WVAS members do with this new technique!

Abstract Art with Sara Vanderkleed

Happy Valentines Day!

Tuesday, February 16, 7:00pm TAF: Sara Vanderkleed will be our guest artist/speaker. Sara is a member of Artists Own, an independent artist and art teacher, specializing in abstract art. Last fall Sara was the artist in residence at

Breckinridge, Colorado. She gave a workshop there on designing an abstract painting. (http://www.breckcreate.org/event/designing-an-abstract-painting-with-sara-vanderkleed/)

The explanation of that workshop from the website: Learning to view abstract art is similar to hearing a new language. At first your eyes don’t know what you’re seeing just as your ears don’t know what to hear when hearing a new language. Learning to paint abstractly can be just as challenging. We’ll look at two aspects of abstract painting; what inspires you and how to interpret it. We’ll consider principles of design and trusting your intuition.

Sara will give a demonstration based on that workshop. Another WVAS program you don't want to miss!

Barbara Lee January Program

Guest Artist: Barb Lee, watercolor

Barb Lee stretches her paper, soaks it first and then staples it to a homasote board. She tries to use only transparent watercolor when she paints. Permanent rose, cobalt blue, aureolin yellow are the colors she usually uses. She uses 150 lb. cold press paper. Barb painted a sunset landscape. She began with a yellow sky with a band of rose at the horizon, and blue along the land. She frequently uses a mister to get the paint to “move.” She painted streaks of violet across the yellow to give the impression of the clouds and uses a brown (sepia and quinacridone gold) for the ground. After drying this she uses a small brush for details. Barb painted two lovely landscapes as we watched. See photos below.

Our Goals

1. To offer opportunities to learn new techniques through workshops, demonstrations, plein air paint outs, field trips, and media presentations.

2. To foster opportunities for artists to exhibit their work through shows both juried and non-juried, as well as other community local venues.

3.To publicize WVWS and other art events and opportunities through meetings, social media and traditional media.

4. To create accessible opportunities for young people to explore art.

5. To sustain a vibrant organization through active member participation in monthly meetings and collaborative leadership using individual talents.

Our History

The Wabash Valley Artist's Society began as the Wabash Valley Watercolor Society in 1989. After much consideration, the board and members voted to expand the organization to include multi- media, acrylics, oils and pastels in addition to watercolor, effective January 2015. The former WVWS, now the WVAS, has a rich history in the Lafayette, Indiana region. Local artists, in search of information, an opportunity to share their interest in painting, and the chance to exhibit their work, formed the Wabash Valley Watercolor Society in 1989. Many of the founding members were students of Barbara Gresham from the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art (now the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette). The inspiration and challenges of her teaching were the catalyst that sparked the society’s formation.
